Why do people tie horses tongues during races, show, ect...???????

  1. Generally, it is to prevent the horse from getting its tongue over the bit, which would make the animal very hard to control or steer.

There are many reasons.  Some trainers say that it's so the horse won't swallow their tongues.  Mostly, it has something to do with the horse taking in too much air through their mouth & this makes it difficult for them to breath through their noses, like they are supposed to do.  Some horses also like to "play" with the bit in their mouths & using a "tongue tie" keeps them from doing so & avoids injuries to the sides of their mouth from the metal bits.  A tongue tie is just a long piece of cotton duck flannel material that has been ripped or cut from the same material as the leg bandages.  It is wrapped around the horses tongue, then under their bottom jaw & tied on the outside for easy removal if needed.
