  1. I know it iskinda stupid. They are getting paid for it ya know! :)

  2. For excellent service and no other reason.

  3. The tradition Of tipping started many many years ago. When it first started it was " To Insure Prompt Service" and was given before the meal. This makes sense as the more money you paid the better service you got. The tradition has changed over the years and has been adapted over the years and taken advantage of by the restaurant industry.Unfortunately not tipping a server when they give you good service would be punishing them for the system.

  4. T. I. P. S.

Originally was  "to improve service" however the present connation is debatable----the only incentive today is if you do not leave a tip when service/food quality was bad----even then it is considered bad taste to not leave a tip.

Tips whether actually received or not are calculated into the remuneration given serving employees when adjusting wage rates--kind of un fair to me !

A further injustice is that servers are required by law to report all tips so that they can then be taxed by the Federal Government on them as earned income !!

Myself, the customer, has already paid an income tax on that money !

So today a tip is presumed which in effect negates any significance of its original intent: to secure a good tip the servers would strive to give prompt, effecient, courteous service to the customer.  We ought to rename itTPBS=to prevent bad service, some how that hasn't got the same "ring" to it !

  5. Because waiters/waitresses work for much less than minimum wage.  Something like $2.15/hour.  The make up the rest with tips.  Unless you have really bad service, you should always tip at least 15% of your total bill.  Higher for great service.

  6. Most people have already answered this. Waiters/Servers make $2.13 per hour. The balance of their income is from Tips left by their guest. You are tipping them for the work they do for you. The restaurant could eliminate the need for tipping by charging you more so they could pay the servers what you make an hour. Serving is a difficult job. But good servers love what they do and enjoy making the guest they serve have a great time.

  7. Ok let me ask you how much money do you make an hour?   A waiter or A server at least were I am from only make 2:13 an hour so we live on nothing except what people leave as a tip...  So you should think about it the next time you tip that could be putting food on there table for there kids.....

  8. People who work as waiters and waitresses don't get a very good pay so to thank them for serving them you would tip them.  Hope this helps!

  9. The waiter does not get the normal wage, he gets less, so you are tipping him for the service. The pizza guy you are tipping for his service also. try to give them 15% to 20 %.

  10. because thats the only money they make, (off the tips!) without tips they would be broke.
