Why do people turn mean to you when you don't look your best, but then act nice when you fix yourself up?

When I try to look pretty, I do it for myself. I won't do it even for my boyfriend... okay, that's a bit of a white lie, lol. But anyways, I've noticed something very interesting; If I come downstairs in the morning with my naturally wavy hair, no makeup, and comfy clothes, my family treat me with disrespect. Now, if I come downstairs with my hair done, makeup on, all dressed up, they all coo about how pretty I look and ask me friendly questions.

Now, you might relate to this because this happens everyday in society. We feel the pressure to look good because if we don't, we risk getting crictisized for no reason, or for any dumb reason, just cause of the way we look. I don't think I'm ugly, but this is really pathetic. Has anyone else noticed this too? How did you deal with it?

  1. Because they're shallow. I have a coworker similar to that - she's only friendly with the guys at work, with the girls she's just fake. And she already has a bf!

  2. I take it that you are young. Most young people are superficial and petty.  I assume that they think that if you don't try to look good, then you must be lazy.

They have done studies that prove that people who are unattractive are more likely to be convicted by a jury in criminal cases. Good looking people are more likely to be given the benefit of a doubt. That's just the way that human nature works.

  3. I was sent an email recently about celebrities without makeup and it was sent by a male.  I was not shocked by the way the were caught off guard by the camera on their private days.  I was more shocked by the way they caked-on the makeup on publicity days and totally looked farfetched from the real deal.  People need to tone down the make-up look and stop performing all the time so the real world won't dog them so badly when they present themselves in their real beauty.

The same folks who criticize are the ones who need to make themselves up before they go out in public because they are ashame of their real selves.

  4. Because people are superficial and shallow.

That's just the world.  Get used to it.  It's frustrating, but it won't go away.  You just have to develop thick skin.

  5. All organisms are designed to show their health and fitness.  Nonhuman animals generally shun of attack those members of their societies which are perceived to be weak, ill, or genetically unfit.  This is generally based on the appearance of the organism.

While humans have evolved tremendously from such animals, this is still instinctual.  As you pass over about 35, you leave the reproductive years, and such things become less important to any organism.  At that point, life revolves around "live and let live".
