Why do people wait until the very last minute to merge into a traffic lane?

Some of the roads I travel to and from work are under construction. I would like to know why people wait until the very last minute to merge into a traffic lane when there are signs posted all over creation stating that the lane is going to end. And...why do they never, ever use their turn signal to merge? I've noticed that more men than woman think just bogarting your way in is the appropriate way to merge.

  1. they want to get ahead. i see this all the time.

  2. it's the whole concept of "self-entitlement". they're jockeying for better position because they think they're the only ones in a hurry or have an important engagement they can't miss. it's selfishness.

  3. Sometimes people feel that they can "jump ahead" a LITTLE bit if they travel ahead and merge at the last second - other times, folk just aren't paying enough attention to their driving and didn't realize the lane was ending (translation:  bad driving)

Turn signals have been used "against" us so much that we've learned - if we use a turn signal for a lane change ...that seems to trigger those in the next lane to simply speed up and prevent us from changing lanes.  Or we simply forget.

  4. beause people are retards

  5. I agree with Tom.  The people who can't be bothered to read road signs or figure out what the heck they're doing behind the wheel are just plain ignorant.  Ditto that for people who can't seem to find their turn signals.
