Why do people wear the wedding ring on their finger first, then the engagement ring?

I have noticed that people wear their wedder ring on their ring finger first, then the engagement ring. I thought that it would have been the other way around because the engagement ring came first? So why is this?

I observe that people in Asia wear their engagement ring first, which symbolizes that the engagement is now 'locked' by the marriage. People in US / Europe wear the wedding band first, the reason being that it should be closest to the heart. But it is all up to personal preference. I will not want to wear both on the same finger cos I don't want them to scratch against each other.
