Question:

Why do people who absolutely HATE anime love Cowboy Bebop?

This is quite an anomaly to me. I have met COUNTLESS people, both men and women, who cannot stand watching an anime movie and yet they can't get enough of Cowboy Bebop. I mean, I have seen the series and the movie, both in Japanese and in English. I thought it was very well done, but the praise that it is getting, in my opinion, is absolutely ridiculous. Can someone please explain this to me?

  1. People have a variety of reasons for disliking anime, and most of these reasons are not present in Cowboy Bebop.

You have less big eyed and crazily designed characters, the action is fluid and clear and for the most part realistic (within the context that, yes, this is a science fiction show). Very few elements of Japanese culture are present (You may not think about it often, but there are a variety of cultural differences that come across, such as a very different sense of humor then is present in normal American entertainment). The characterizations are more familiar to Americans than most anime characters. The music is obviously a huge factor. It's not J-Pop like in most shows, and is definitely very unique. How many cartoons have Jazz soundtracks?

The episodic nature helps a lot. It makes it easier for people to get into the show after watching just about any random episode. In contrast, most anime series have huge, overarching plots that can last for dozens of episodes. Bebop episodes are usually stand alone (there's only two two-part episodes in the whole series).

Lastly, Cowboy Bebop is one of the most adult anime shows that have ever been presented to Americans. It's not a show for children, and that's not just because of the violence/s*x/drugs content (which is very light), it's the over all tone of the show.

  2. Well...it depends.different people have different reasons.I personally  like it.

  3. Question is what show do you think is better than Cowboy? Or better yet is there an anime that you would think is better than the presentation Bebop has?

the reality of it is, is that bebop is one of the very FEW anime that stands outside the norm. The fact of the matter is that, you are irritated because it ultimately doesn't matter whether it is subbed or dubbed, it has a natural matureness that makes people forget it is even an animation! The theme is so mature that it feels ordinary, but those who HATE anime dislike what Bebop lacks. What you are displeased about is the fact that anime has, usually, more potential than Bebop, and that they stick with a primitive title.

To put it simply, Bebop has elements, that make people feel that they are watching a non-anime subject. It is that simple...
