Why do people with small children...?

violate the 'assigned' seating rule when flying? I think they (mama, daddy, and the 2.5 kids) need to sit in the seats they paid for on an airplane. OR...if mama and daddy want to keep the family unit together, then at least 'ask' me if I would allow you/your child to sit in my seat? I get so sick and tired of parents (usually the mamas) assuming that because they have small kids, others should be willing to give up their 'assigned' seat(s) for them! Does anyone feel me?

  1. I forgot that some airlines still have "assigned" seats.

People really just assume that you are going to vacate your seat without asking?  I would consider that rude even though I would gladly trade my seat out for someone with a child flying.  All it takes is a moment to ask.  Seems like common courtesy to me.

  2. Actually I have a small child and the airlines have in the past booked us incorrectly and separated. They do this to fill all seats in any way possible. Furthermore, they expect the flight attendant to fix the problem on board. They are not supposed to book a child separate from the adult. I think the parent should have manners in the situation, but I also believe the other person(s) should be curtious as well and offer the seat if reasonable.

  3. When you have small children, sometimes you have to make sacrifices; in this case, the parent is sacrificing good manners in order to care for their children.  Irritating, yet what can ya do?

  4. I understand... they definitely should ask, but you should also think about whether you would like to be sitting next to a three year old while his/her mom is five rows away.  The kid probably wouldn't stop crying or talking or bothering you.  At least if you are willing to transfer seats, you wouldn't have to deal with some annoying kid, right?
