Am i the only one who finds this weird? Why should periods be connected to the way in which the earth moves? or is this just a stupid question?

...not quite sure what this question comes under...

  1. Numerous traditional sources agree that the menstrual cycle is linked to the cycle of the moon. These sources generally indicate that women menstruate at the time of the new moon, and ovulate at the full moon. Although scientific evidence for this has been weak, the problem may be that most women today live in urban environments where the moon is no longer a significant contributor to nocturnal light. The fact that women who work on night shifts, where they are exposed to strong light at night, often experience menstrual irregularities, is just one example of how rhythms of light and darkness do influence hormonal physiology, including the menstrual cycle.[16]

The very word menstruation is etymologically related to moon. The terms "menstruation" and "menses" come from the Latin mensis (month), which in turn relates to the Greek mene (moon) and to the roots of the English words month and moon — reflecting the fact that the moon also takes close to 28 days to revolve around the Earth (actually 27.32 days). The synodical lunar month, the period between two new moons (or full moons), is 29.53 days long.

A 1975 book by Louise Lacey documented the experience of herself and 27 of her friends, who found that when they removed all artificial nightlighting their menstrual cycles began to occur in rhythm with the lunar cycle. She dubbed the technique Lunaception.[17] Later studies in both humans[18] and animals[19] have found that artificial light at night does influence the menstrual cycle in humans and the estrus cycle in mice (cycles are more regular in the absence of artificial light at night), though none have duplicated the synchronization of women's menstrual cycles with the lunar cycle. One author has suggested that sensitivity of women's cycles to nightlighting is caused by nutritional deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals.[20]

Some have suggested that the fact that other animals' menstrual cycles appear to be greatly different from lunar cycles is evidence that the average length of humans' cycle is most likely a coincidence.

  2. Because God is incredible and has created a perfect universe.  Nothing can evolve that perfectly!!!

  3. No it is not a a strange question at all. It is a very intriguing question which many people disagree upon. Some scientist  believed that all living life on earth is actually tied into cycles of the moon. The ocean's waves and currents are pulled by the forces of the moons gravitational pull. Women have ever since antiquity have been connected with the moon and its seemingly miraculous beauty and mystery. The moon is connected to the body of a woman the same way that light from the sun controls the life cycles of plants( flowers ). I believe that there is both a scientific and mystique reason for the moon's connection to women. To a person who understands the power of the occult( hidden ) world,(metaphysics and such..) women are directly connected with the security of night and the rejuvenate life giving qualities of the earth. To scientist They believe that women evolved this way over time. To cultures like Ancient Egypt, Ancient India and Indians in the land now known as America, women are seen as Goddesses of the moon who channel its power to bring life and healing in to the world. mystical. The connection of a woman's periods follow the monthly cycle of the moon, every 28 days. In my opinion me this proves that there is a unmistakable connection between the earth moon cosmos and universe which can not be fully defined by modern science. This is because modern science ascribes ailments to the body to a physical origin, without noticing the connection between the body and the cosmos. Since we do live in a scientific hedonistic society my comment will probably fall to deaf ears of people who are skeptical of spiritual power. Their must be  a unity of science and spiritualism in the minds of all people for them to see the true magnificence of live and the true power of human beings.

  4. Not the earth, the moon.  I'm sure there's a scientific reason, but I wouldn't have a clue what.

  5. What an interesting question. Ive wondered about it myself so thank you for asking it!

  6. Peter K is so right,

  7. The moon also plays a part in this story, as well as women living together.

  8. There has to ba some time period, and it happens to be similar to the period of the moon.

But some women have very regular 23 day cycles, some 28, some longer. So there is vide variation even in humans.

Can it be that it just HAPPENS to be close to the monon's phase? Do we have to assume tht there is some kind of link? Is coincidence not possible?

Other mammals do not ovulate in phase with the moon. I submit that humans do not either.

  9. I've seen this question asked and answered before in a newsgroup.  I've also read about it, but I'm trying to remember.  When thinking in terms of harmonics or synchronicity, you should realize that being close may mean absolutely nothing at all.  Now if a month is somehow significant, then the moon would be the only external physical thing that is related to it.  And the average human estrus cycle is not the same as the lunar cycle.  It's different by what, a day and a half.  This is significant when making large scale correlations.  Also consider that the menstrual cycle varies widely from species to species.  Why would we be special?

  10. Periods are definitely connected with the phases of the moon. Why this should be is a mystery but many plants and animals have cycles connected with the moon.

  11. I don't think it has anything to do with the moon..or coincidence.

I think "MAN" decided to make the months coincide with woman's cycles, just so we have an idea of when we need to be gone fishin.

If a month was every 14 days, or every 60 days....men wouldn't have a clue...our timing would be off....and we'd get bitched at alot more for nothing.

I know that every 25-30 days, I need to have something planned that keeps me out of the house, and out of the way.

  12. You've hit upon an excellent question for pondering the "coindidence" of so much we are surrounded by.  These "cooincidences" point to an intelligent designor.  "Menstral" derives from the word for "moon", due to the obvious connection for counting time.  The ancient Hebrews kept their calander based upon 360 days (divided by 12).

Another such uniqueness to wonder about is the absolutely PERFECT distance earth is located from the sun to sustain life!  If it were 1/1,000,000  of one MILLIONTH closer, it would be too hot for life to exist.  If earth were 1 millionth of one MILLIONTH farther, it would be too cold for life.  Mathmaticians recognize the odds against  this perfect distance just "happening" are so remote, as to render it impossible.

Also, the angle of earth's tilt is exactly what is needed to regulate moderate climate fluxuations, without creating killing exremes.

If oxygen and other gases were not the exact proportions they are, life would be impossible.  And yet, these are marvelously mantained as balanced to exact ratios needed.

More than you asked, but I hope, of interest.
