on phones the numbers go like this

123

456

789

On keyboards, it goes

789

456

123

So the top and bottom lines are swapped around. I find it very annoying as I keep typing 1 when I need 7

  1. the designer of the DTMF pad wanted to make it simple for limited sighted people while the keyboard number pad is layed out like an adding machine where you start at the bottom.

  2. Bob knows his stuff, but he missed it on this one.

When push-button phones were first introduced, a thing called a "10 key" was widely used in the business world.  You might call it a desk calculator.  A good 10 key operator could make those numbers FLY, like a good typist.   They didn't think about what button to push, they just type-touched, and very quickly.

This presented a problem. The early phone equipment wouldn't respond to button presses as fast as a good 10 key operator could hit them.  So, all those 10-key operators out there would have nothing but problems with the new push-button phones.  This would create a considerable amount of bad publicity.

So, the number order was reversed so that 10-key operators would have to slow down and think about what buttons they were pressing.
