  1. Juliet, Echo, Delta, X-Ray.. These are all letters of the alphabet.

  2. At airports with ATC coverage they issue an ATIS (Automated Terminal Information Service).

At the very least, it contains items like weather.

In addition, it can have runways in use, NOTAMS (Notices To Airmen), which could include closed taxiways, obstructions in the vicinity, etc....

At the end of the pre-recorded ATIS (which is update usually hourly about 15 or 10 mins 'till the hour) it will have "Information Alpha".  Next update will be "Bravo", C, E, E... etc.

By the pilot advising ATC they have information "Juliet (J)", it lets ATC know you have all that information and they don't have to provide it to you.

Hope this gelps answer your question.

... also, congratulations on your intro flight.  I hope you loved it and it will be the start of many more!

  3. ATIS

  4. It is the identifier for the ATIS (Automated Terminal Information Service).  This lets ATC know you have the current info for the airport.

An example of an ATIS message:

KELOWNA AIRPORT INFORMATION BRAVO.  WEATHER AT 1700 ZULU.  WIND 320 AT 5.  VISIBILITY 15 MILES.  FEW CLOUDS AT FIVE THOUSAND.  TEMPERATURE 15, DEWPOINT 8.  ALTIMETER 3013.  IFR APPROACH ILS/DME 1 RUNWAY 16 CIRCLING RUNWAY 34.  ACTIVE RUNWAY 34.  INFORM ATC THAT YOU HAVE INFORMATION BRAVO.
