Why do plant cells have a tonoplast and why is it important to have a tonoplast?

  1. Proteins in the tonoplast regulate the control of H2O in and out of a plant cell's large central vacuole.  So, it basically serves as a semipermeable membrane for the vacuole; and without it working properly the plant cell could burst from supersaturation or wither and die.
