  1. Well poor countries tend to also have a very high infant mortality rate --a woman might give birth to 5 children, but maybe only 2 of those survive to adulthood.  Secondly, birth control isn't as accessible and knowledge about family planning isn't always widespread either.  Lastly, if you do a lot of manual labor, it might help to have more kids--more hands to do work (I'm thinking of families in earlier times in America even, where it made sense to have a lot of kids to help on farms, etc).

  2. the other comment also is true, about the mortality rate. i think it also has to do with culture.

  3. I think Person has it right.  Also, there are many people who have access to birth control but don't use it because of religious convictions, they feel that children are a blessing from God and to hinder reproduction would be sinful.

I think that it is a stereotype though.  There are many wealthy families who have many children and poor families who have one or two.  I think we focus on the poor though because we wonder why they would have more when it is so hard to provide for them.  Also, in poorer countries, people have to rely on eachother more instead of their government, so if you see a woman with ten kids, chances are they aren't all hers; some of them may be the children of a dead relative or neighbor's children that she has taken in, sharing what little she has with them.  Not all countries have food stamps, WIC, and welfare....

  4. Lack of birth control and feel the need to breed.

  5. The same reasons people do here in the USA.  They lack s*x education.  Young men, and men my own age (over 40) honestly don't know the basics.  Sure they know where to put it, and what a condom is.  They don't know much else.  But they think they know everything.

Most don't know any of the following:

    1. The names of their own parts.

    2. The difference between sperm and s***n.

    3. What are the effective means of birth control.

    4. Yes, she can still get pregnant if she is on top.

    5. Pulling out is very ineffective.

    6. Masturbating before having s*x does not eliminate all the sperm.

    7.  Two or three dollars for a condom is better than 18 years of child support.

    8.  A vasectomy costs less than one month of child support.

The other reason is the mechanism that keeps them poor is the same one that causes them to make all the babies.  The same people that lack motivation to improve their standard of living, also  lack motivation to take the time to use birth control.

  6. Maybe to them, their kids ARE their wealth.

  7. They can't afford birth control.  They don't think about birth control being cheaper than a kid.  Maybe people are poor because they are lazy and don't want to work and are also too lazy to go get birth control.

  8. lack of birth control is one thing. Also the mortality rate is very high so chances are that not all of their kids are going to even make it to adulthood. Sometimes things just happen. I don'tt think it's intentional starvation.

  9. Everyone has kids- we just shine the light of shame on those of little means
