  1. Isn't it obvious?

    I think I knew that as soon as I realized they were on the other side, maybe about the time I was 4 years old.

    So when they drive up the street delivering mail they can just drive up to the mailboxes and and don't have to get out walk around.

So that the mailman does not have to get out of their vehicle to deliver the mail to your mailboxes and if you have the newer style cluster mailboxes then they will only need to get out and step on the curb and put your mail in, the less amount of time on the road for them means the less chance they have of being hit by a vehicle.

  3. Pretty simple -- the vehicles drive along the right side of the road (U.S.) and attend to mailboxes along the road as they go. The driver sits on the right so it is easy to access the box without sliding across the seat at every stop.
