Why do ppls say "WORD" especially Boyzz=]]]?

Using 'word' as an acknowledgment is actually a shortening of 'word up,' a phrase that was popularized in the mid to late 1980's.  The phrase was commercialized by the band Cameo with their hit single "Word Up!," which was later covered by Korn in 2004.

It's meaning is in response to the query, "What's up?"  It is just a general term that has no useful etymology, similar to the way that both 'tight' and 'sweet' can mean the same thing, yet their alternative use does not derive from their true meaning.
