  1. It just confirms that you and your partner agree on the score, you don't have to if your just playing a social game, it is just for comps.

  2. Everyone wether professional or amateur is required to sign their score card or they get disqualified, of course this is only in a tournament.

    Have a good one...

  3. you sign a card to make it valid. if not you can be disqualified. if no one verifies your score people will cheat. if you play competitions you must sign

  4. You sign a card to make it valid. if not you can be disqualified. Just like Michelle Wie she got disqualified in the tournament. You have to show it to the officials.

  5. It is ALWAYS done in tournaments, professional or amateur.  In a tournament you do not keep your own score, you keep the score of someone else in your group.  At the end of the round the scorer signs the card, and then you sign where it says "attest", meaning that you agree with the score that he has recorded for you.  This is considered the gentlemen's way of preventing someone from making an "error" on their card and returning a score lower than they actually shot.

  6. If you have never played in an official tournament of the club or in amateur circles, there has been no need to attest a score. However, if you play in any club plaque tournament or USGA sanctioned event  your score is kept by a fellow competitor and you keep his. At the end of the round you sign the card as scorer and he attests that the score is correct by also signing the card. Then he signs the score card he kept for your round and you attest it as being correct.

  7. Because it is required in tournament rules by the USGA.

The PGA players don't keep their own score, they keep the score of their playing partner.  Then, after the round, they sign the card they kept and check their own score that their playing partner recorded.

They sign the card to verify that everything checks out, they agree with the recorded score, and attest to its accuracy.
