Why do professional atheletes with expiring contracts have value?

cuz they aren't valuable when they are in the middle of their contract.

besides, you don't know what you have until its gone!

It allows play off contending teams, to basically "rent" the player for the rest of the season.. If it works out for the new team, great... If not, that team, has nothing else vested in that player....
