Why do "buddies" on AIM when I Add Them Disappear?

I have a Macbook, and I use iChat for AIM. When I add buddies to my list they disappear and cannot be found..is there anything I can to do?

maybe they're invisible or away. check all your buddy lists. or sometimes their screen names are on private so they have to add you so you can see them.
