Why do reality show judges are so cruel on the contestants?

I find that judges give such cruel responses. This is not necessary. What do you think?

they all wanna copy the American Idol formula where you have good judge bad judge and the both sides of the fence  judge

Cruelty to the contestants provides more "real" drama and causes more buzz around the show. More buzz means more people tune in. The best and most promoted moments are when the contestant really loses it and starts ranting. They usually get filmed all the way out of the venue and onto the street!
