  1. Because they can then invest that money in there yonger tallent once there rookie or current contracts expire. Or so they can go after a big name free agent the next year.

  2. To free up cap space for the better free agents

  3. So the teams will have money the next season.

  4. they will be ending and off of the teams books and lowers their cap, the first thing any rebuilding team wants are max contracts that are the result of another team. with expiring contracts you can get them off your books and keep rebuilding. another thing is depending on how the athlete plays for the team you may be able to extend his contract if you want to. it basically gives you better options. Think marbuty he is making 22 million this year and no team wants to trade for him because of that. but if it was half of that then you could trade for him and offer him something a lot less because if he doesn't accept you don't lose some guy you being building your team around for 4-5 years.

  5. They need the cap room space so they can offer great players the best contract.

  6. say you were the Grizzlies this last year, you trade Pau Gasol who has 3 years remaining on a 15 million per year contract.

(thats 45 million you are commited to spending)

now you trade him for Kwame Brown who has 1 year remaining on his EXPIRING contract at 20 million

(so next year you arent comitted to that 15 million you were gonna pay Gasol, AND you are under the salary cap so you can go looking for other players)

  7. to free up cap space for future signings.

when theyre contract ends, the team just doesnt sing htem and therefore would have more money in their cap space to spend on other players.
