Why do records cost so much to produce? (not the cds, but the process)?

Axel Rose supposedly burned 12 million on Chinese Democracy, why would it cost that much?

First, don't believe everything you read

You can make a movie with 12 Mil, but if you have it and want to spend it, I am sure there are many ways:

Rent a studio for months

Hire musicians -(or even orchestras) - the more the most expensive

Hotels

Staff

Food

Travel

12 mil may also include the marketing and advertising campaign, plus the first 1-2 music videos.
