A double-blind experiment is when there are different treatment groups, like group A gets the real drug and group B gets the placebo, and neither the researchers nor the participants know which group they're in.  If they did know, then participants may respond differently because of psychological effects or researchers may unintentionally treat the groups differently, affecting the results.
