  1. The server has to be pretty dedicate to the large party and can't serve as many other tables. This translates to less in tips for the night. The added gratuity for parties helps ensure that the server doesn't get screwed.

  2. workers do expect tips every time they serve people

  3. To prevent getting stiffed by a bunch of people who all expect someone else to leave the tip.

  4. so the waitress/waiter doesn't get stiffed.

  5. often the restaurant takes a percentage of the tips, even if the server doesn't make any, imagine serving big tables all night and at the end of the night owing the company money

  6. I was a server and huge parties are really challenging to take care of well, and those who are too cheap to tip... it could really hurt the server bad for the night. Also, Big parties generally take longer to process in and out. Large parties may involve rearranging tables that come from different server's sections, forcing servers to split the parties with another, or just otherwise clog up the turnover for that server. Many servers in most states are only paid like 2,3,4, or 5 dollars an hour and this is one of the toughest professions in the world. You're dealing with the hungry public. I was only 20 or 21 years old, very fit and healthy male and I would come home after 6 hour shifts EXHAUSTED and stressed, and feeling like i was 70 and dying haha

  7. Because servers HATE large parties.  They're a lot of work and most of the time, the tip they would leave would be measley.   When I waited tables, I would have much waited on 4 tables of 2 then 1 table of 8.

  8. because, the server works hard for the party and when they leave, they leave a very small tip so, thts why rest. add  20 % on to the checks.
