Question:

Why do restaurants train waiters to interrupt conversations repeatedly to ask?

"is everything okay?" and then disappear when people are looking around to get the check? I have repeatedly spent minutes looking for our waiter to get the check and have several times simply gotten up to leave and told the casher our check was never brought. In a good situation the waiter asks if we want desert and places the check on the table a few moments after we say "No."

  1. Waiting tables was my first job, and I did it for many many years.  I was trained in a country club, and I would have been fired for such behaviors.  To date, there have been few places I've gone to experience GOOD service, let alone GREAT service.  TIPS means:  To Insure Proper Service.  Let your money speak for you!

  2. I used to be a waiter and as bad as it sounds I waited until they just took a bite of food before I ask if every thing is ok.  They will nod and I will quickly get to something else.  If they really need something they will flag me down shortly there after but it is to do the work that I need to do and continue to make the customer happy.  However I have always brought out the check when I ask if every thing is ok for the third time after I brought out the food.  If they want desert I will adjust the check.  The goal is to have the customer raise the bill as high as possible increasing  your tip.  But if you are a sucky waiter that tip is going to be small anyway.  If that happens too many times talk to the manager.

  3. I don't experience that situation.

  4. yeah i have always wondered that too.

  5. A waitperson is trained to BE ATTENTIVE to the tables they are serving. They need to check and see if anything is needed, or how the food is ( temp, wellness, taste, etc.....) Of course a person with limited restaurant experience would think this is an interuption. You would prefer to have the serving person drop off the plates and show up with the check when all chewing is done, is that it ??? Or are you as arrogant as to think they should stand idly by while waiting for your beckoning for whatever it is that would make your dining experience more enjoyable? What are you , some kind of Moron ??

How ignorant you are for asking a ridiculous question like this !

Try McDonald's, they won't bother you while you eat. Of course, your type, would leave the trash on the table and leave.

  6. i am a waitress, and i just don't understand you're attitude.  you complain when the server comes by your table to check on you, and then complain when they leave you alone!  servers have many things to do, including waiting on tables (and no, it's not just YOUR table, other people are dining out as well), running food, making drinks, cleaning, hosting, etc. maybe you should stop going out to eat, because i'm sure people dislike waiting on you just as much as you dislike their service.  how do you feel when someone comes to your place of business and tells you how to do your job?

  7. Sounds like a problem with this one restaurant... otherwise I agree with your detractors here... waiters are supposed to be attentive and check on things periodically... by the way to one of the answers... T.I.P. stands for To Insure Promptness from olde England... they were usually paid up front to insure or effect better service in the old pubs there... I love it when people make stuff up to sound knowledgeable!... BTW, some of you should spend a month as a server and see waht it's like before you are so critical of those of us in the industry!

  8. You sound like an angry man......that is sad.Why would you berate a server that was just trying to do the job.Seems perhaps that your anger may be why you cannot find a server at the end of the meal. They may have had enough of you and, your bad moodThere is no excuse to be rude to a server,Many of my servers are someones mom, someones daughter, someones love of thier life and most important my friends as well as employee, I would imagine you would find me to be an ungracious manager, but I would certainly stand up to a bully if that was the case. You should stay at home to dine you will be happier

  9. i have never known its really irritating but....or when they stand really close to your table and just hover around so you cant have the conversation you wanna have cause they can hear!!! i hate that.

That will actually stop me from going back to a resturant.

  10. I could usually tell if someone wants something just by catching their eye. Many servers are morons who do not care about the customers.

  11. I know.  It's annoying as h**l.  Just let me eat and enjoy dinner.
