Why do roses keep growing even thought they've been...?

in a vase for almost 3 weeks? my co-worker got some for mother's day and we were just wondering, she says they've been sprouting little new buds and leaves, do you why? thanks!

  1. I assume there was some sort of nutrients added to the water.  As long as the cells get enough water, nutrients and light, living cells and tissues will keep growing.  However, it will be limited.  The cut stems will die.
