Question:

Why do schools require tests like GMAT?

Many business schools say they require GMAT scores, but do not have a minimum requirement for admission. The GMAT website clearly states that this exam does not measure your abilities. Moreover, the GMAT is excruciatingly evil in the way is asks its questions and presents its answers. It sets you up to fail. So if this exam is so unindicative of your actual abilities, why require it? Why would a business school turn you down for no other reason than a low score on the GMAT when they have no set requirement? It makes no sense to me. What aspect am I missing here?

  1. The exam is not set up to make you fail.

the exam tests your math and communication skills and ability to perform under pressure - all important for b school.

Students from various different backgrounds, colleges and countries apply. This is a standardized test so the admission staff can look at everyone in the same light.

it is not a defining point to bshool admission - i know several guys with 750 who didn't get admission, and i know a guy with 650 who did. getting a high score definitely makes it easier though.

if you have significant work experience and have a demonstrated ability in entrepreneurial pursuits then can might be able to get in without a GMAT too.
