  1. Public schools today are in big trouble. They lack parental involvement, yet, it is a catch 22 type situation. Many times, school authorities only want parental involvement, insomuch, as the parent agreeing with their position. When a parent does not agree with the school's particular stance on an issue (take for instance substandard conduct of a teacher), then they view that parent as an interloper and a menace and wish that parent to be uninvolved. They simply cannot have it both ways.

As long as parents are tax contributing citizens, which fund the bulk of the inept system, they will have our input. They want our support, our money, but not our input. That is it in a nutshell.

Teaching wise, some of what is out there in the public school setting is less than professional. When we lack quality, we get shortchanged.

True Story. I have four children, three of whom are still enrolled in this school system in eastern TN. School system is far from ideal here. Top administrator is unresponsive, lacks leadership ability, is apathetic, and generally is uninvolved. Tries to tell the public how to think. Does not respond when substandard abusive type teaching personnel have a negative impact on the children and youth here.

One of my children was assaulted by a teacher on school grounds earlier this year. A teacher grabbed my child's arm in a reckless manner when she did not like the response that my child gave to her after the teacher was harassing and ranting, over a ten minute period of time after school. Thus the assault, though minor, left a bruise upon my child's arm. I tried to settle this as amicably as possible without hastily involving the police. I demanded a meeting from the principal, assistant principal, and the two teachers involved. (One literally bruised my child's arm, while the other verbally ganged up on my child. )

It took the school system over 15 days to meet with me. Perhaps they knew I was angry and had hoped that by this time I would have cooled off. Two teachers of course, denied this type of activity. (Yet, be aware, there were five witnesses)

I was asked at this meeting by the principal if I was tape recording this conference, of which I replied I was not. The meeting between these individuals did get heated and twice I voiced that I had planned to file whatever complaints were necessary in writing to halt this type of abuse. (These two teachers have also had problems with other students and parents, especially those that are not afraid to confront their substandard conduct and unprofessional behavior.) I do not know that there was much of a positive outcome at all in meeting with these people but I did make it known that I will climb the hierarchical

ladder in resolving this matter and did not care if it received media or public attention as long as it was solved and this abuse of children ceased and did not continue.

After this meeting, within a two week period,  two of my children (they are in the same grade) were abruptly shunned and mistreated by these two teachers in question, and I expressed those concerns of retaliation to the principal and vice principal on five occasions. One of my children also expressed the mistreatment of these teachers to the principal and vice principal upon four occasions. (there is a strict and well defined policy in this school system regarding bullying and intimidation and it indicates in the policy that if a teacher complaint is substantiated, that teacher is subject to consequence, up to termination.)

Within three weeks after this meeting, I received a letter from some attorney in Nashville, indicating that he was the entity that represents the school board in this small eastern TN community and that, according to some order of the local superintendent (whom I have never spoken with)  I was absolutely banned from entering the school for any reason and could only drop off my children and/ or pick them up, nor could I call or email anyone associated with or employed by the school system. Now what is this? I have not harassed or threatened anyone? I was simply trying to resolve a conflict with my children.  Where is the court order accompanying this letter? (There is none.)

Now is this bullying by the school system? Are they not trying to bully me, as these two teachers bullied my children? I would say it is. This is not over yet. I will continue to climb the ladder and make as much noise as possible to resolve this matter. I have consulted and retained legal counsel.

I believe that the school system here tries hard to threaten and or scare parents that hit just a little too close to home! It seems that they want control, but cannot and will not do anything to control their substandard and abusive teaching personnel.

If they do not wish to have my involvement, they had better fund the bill for private school and/or reimburse me for all property taxes paid (which go to fund this defunct system) and the sales tax portion that is allocated to the schools.

Often it is exhausting to remain involved but very necessary. After all, it is only our youth at stake! That is the most precious commodity we have.

Kids are kids. They are not miniature adults. They are in school to learn not to be abused. They are all individuals with individual needs.

There is a  a website dedicated to the substandard teaching personnel and the problems that have been recurrently ignored... that occur from the top level down in this eastern TN community. Check it out.

We must identity the problems then work toward the solutions. Only then will we have a better school system!

  2. school is a form of torture which some people relate it to being kept captive and some even call it "jail". it takes away everything you know and love and replace it with homework and old scary teachers.

    end of story.
