  1. They don't now.  Take a look at an inland rubbish tip.

The original location of seagulls needed to provide the right resources, and those usually included fish and cliffs for relatively secure nesting sites.  Being equipped for preying on fish meant the sea was the best location for their particular trade.

  2. They don't. The state bird of Utah (hardly a coastal state) is the "seagull". Locusts were busily devouring all the crops planted by the LDS (Mormon) settlers, when a horde of California gulls descended on the area and started feasting on the locusts. I think that those were the last Californians to be welcomed in Utah.

  3. its because they have adapted/evolved to survive and reproduce efficiently that specific environment.  i'm not completely sure, but they probably have a diet of fish and things found around water.

  4. Because there are plenty of fish their main food.

  5. Not all species do.  In North America there are several inland species.  There are two species I see all the time at local lakes and standing around in large parking lots.  The most common is the ringed-billed gull.
