Why do snails melt when they are exposed to salt?

  1. Osmotic pressure.  The moisture leaches from the snail's interior to dissolve the salt.


  2. The snails have a lot of water content, while the salt has nearly none.  Thus, through osmosis, water diffuses from the cells of the snail into the salt. This causes the salt to hydrate and the snail to dehydrate, leaving a slimy salt solution on a dried/shriveled snail.
