  1. It is a long race and can be tough on a horse.


  2. The Belmont Stakes is an EXTREMELY competetive and hard race to compete in, for both horse and jockey. Only top Thoroughbred horses are trained enough and fit enough to run in a race like this....the horses also have to be high up on the breeding list, meaning good and royal blood lines. The horses need to be fit, famous, and ready to go!

  3. 1 1/2 miles is a long race. Tough on a horse.

  4. because it's a mile and a half and most horses can't go that distance
