  1. First of all, Subduction (two tectonic plates meet) zone related earthquakes (affected to sea)  which generate all of tsunamis. And Sumatra is a part of ring of fire, java trench.

Java trench trough west of sumatra and Indian ocean.

Thats why, if earthquake happens in java trench, in particular west of Sumatra, it can generate tsunami.

But overall, trench on ring of fire in east japan can cause tsunami too, but perhaps subduction in java trench happens more frequent / unstable.

  2. there was only one tsunami. it went all over the world because of the ocean currents.

the loss of the earth in the water from the quake caused so much water displacement that caused the tsunami to hit.

to learn more go to www.usgs.gov see tsunami

  3. There are 3 types of plate boundaries. Divergent, moving away from each other. Transform, move side to side. Convergent, move towards each other.

It is b/c it is located by Convergent Plate Boundaries (2 plates moving toward each other). Thats why they have earthquakes.

  4. something to do with the tectonic plates being very active in that region....
