Why do so many drivers hog the middle lane of the motorway, even when there is a clear lane next to them?!!?

and while we`re on the subject how about people who hog the "OVERTAKING LANE" not the fast lane is a lot of people say!

They all belong to the Center Lane Owners Club, and are still stuck in the 60s when you went different speeds in different lanes. Ban them, I say.

I guess it is because no sooner do you occupy the inside lane than you have to pull out to overtake and you frequently find that drivers behind you do not anticipate this and you have to wait to get out, although I do not hold with those people who refuse to go in to the outside lane.

These people are the type that feel that the world owes them something and they owe the world nothing.  I wish that the police would in force the fact that people need to move over.  I live in an area where there are a lot of retired people and they have no time worries at all.  They putter along in the fast lane and have no idea who else is on the road.  As the baby boomers come of retirement age we are going to see this problem get worse and the roads clogged because of it.  Then there are the people that are trying to pull a fast one by having a dummy to travel in the carpool lane.  Those people should be heavily fined and their dummy's taken from them.  What most people do not realize is that if they would show some consideration and only use the fast lane to pass then get back over everyone would benefit from the traffic being sped up!

Because they are selfish people who have no idea of the Highway Code & its about time the Police started to pull them in for driving with undue care & attention, they are a menace & probably the cause of many accidents due to people undertaking etc..I've seen people join a motorway 3/4 lanes & go straight to the middle lane,it costs a fortune for a 4lane motorway and these idiots virtually turn it into a dual carraigeway...

If you are doing 70mph (the National Speed Limit) it shouldn't matter. We 70 MPHers are protecting other motorists from excessive speed. There is no such thing as an 'overtaking lane' or a 'fast lane'. They are called Lane 1, 2, 3 etc.

I had my 3rd experience on the motorway when I drove to London at new year. I think I did pretty well lol. I can see what you mean though, I was forever changing lanes just to take over people who were in the wrong lane. I havnt done a lot of motorway driving yet but I can see how annoying it is when people just sit in a certain lane. I think it must just be down to ignorance :)

I take it your from the UK. Most drivers stay in the middle lane as they perceive that the inside lane is for artics. etc. It is annoying however it is even more annoying when you drive correcly, switching lanes, and somebody drives incorrectly blocking you in. For most of my life I have driven on motorways, 35,000 miles per year. The most annoying thing to me has been women putting their make up on, on their way to work, in the outside lane.

Over the years I think I have seen most of the stupid antics people get up to. Swithching 3 lanes to make an exit in less than 80 yards, driving up the **** of people 3 yards away and believe it or not a women giving a bloke a ******** on the M40 south of Beaconsfield just before Christmas. I must admit I had to get into the outside lane to get away from his erratic driving, not suprisingly. P.S. I had a 4x4 at the time. I'm not a voyeur!

You are absolutely correct.

One drives on the left by UK law and lanes to your right are for the purpose of overtaking only.

I once was stopped at a service station on the M6 and overheard a conversation amongst three people filling up next to me. It was obviously the time for them to change drivers and the young lady whose turn it evidently was said to the other two "I have never driven on o a motorway before, what do I do ?" She was answered with "Oh, stay in the middle lane and stick to 60 "

They looked as if they were middle management and were in a Volvo.

There really should be a major road safety campaign to make people aware of how to drive correctly on a motorway.

In the US, education and enforcement with regards to proper lane etiquette is minimal.

And some selfish or otherwise people who cannot realize it on their own dont follow this.

Didn't you know?  The inside lane is full of easily communicable diseases (well stands to reason, that's why so many people avoid them).  

The overtaking lane - well - I actually asked someone about that.  He was doing all the things I HATE in drivers - sticking in the 3 rd lane - never indicating etc.

HE told me that it was accepted that people always drove in the outside lane and only had to move when someone flashed at them.

When I asked (completely gobsmacked - obviously) whether he really mean that.  He looked confused and said "Well, yeah, of course, that's right isn't it?"

There is NO hope!!!

Yeah, that really bugs me.

I make a point of not changing lanes when I'm going passed them to show them the outside lane is clear. More often than not, they'll pull in once I'm passed.

85 mph  and had to accelerate past him so i moved into the

fast lane or lane 3 looked in mirror first before i made my move and noticed a car some distance away coming up behind me i pulled out and started to pass the car at 100 mph

looked in mirror again  and the car that was some distance away was now only about 200 meters  behind me and flashing his lights at me.I passed the car i was overtaking

and indicated that i was pulling in  to let the impatient git behind me to pass.As he went past he hooted at me.I thought to myself what a w***er lets see how you like it so i put my foot down a little bit and caught up with him.He was driving a BMW 318 i.I sat behind him at 112 mph in the fast lane or lane 3 for a while then flashed my lights at him.He ignored me

for a few miles and put his foot down till he got to 120 mph.

I stayed behind him still flashing my lights till he pulled over into the middle lane as we drew level with each other i looked at him and shook my head in disgust then gave him a famous British hand gesture.

Most of these people have simply never been told that keeping to the right (or left, ha ha) allows traffic to move faster, and they're not smart enough to conclude that by observation.
