The Middle Ages was the Age of Faith. The majority of Europe was Catholic, thus generally speaking, Europeans attended Mass, received the Sacraments, heard the Truth, and knew what to believe and do in order to be saved. Many Saints walked the face of the earth during this age of the world. Many holy kings governed and ruled the Catholic nations as well. Of course there were some bad popes and kings, though, sin has always existed since the time of Adam. Generally speaking though, the Middle Ages was the Age of Faith and there were manly holy Saints during this age of time that lived good and holy lives. Unfortunately it was the line of bad popes that led to the Protestant Revolt in the 16th century that divided the Church of Christ. Why do so many modern secularists heavily criticize the Middle Ages?

  1. because "reason" was thrown out in favor of faith. knowledge was also held in low regard. libraries were burned.. learning to read was discouraged .....the list goes on and on.

    theocracy RUINS

  2. "Once there was a time when all people believed in God and the church ruled. This time is called the Dark Ages."

Crusaders invaded into my country and slayed nonbelievers.

    Science was like dead.

  3. Heard the Truth? Hmm! Read on-

Why do you call the TRUTH, "religious bias c**p?"

Because that's what it is, The TRUTH.

    Deist (former Catholic)  No religion.

  4.    The secularist suffer from having to many words and in the process of explanation the words become reductio ad absurda.

  5. There were some good things done by religious people in the Middle Ages.

    On the other hand:

Some of those "holy saints" were local pagan gods.

Some of their "holy relics" were frauds - people went around selling animal bones as bones of saints.

Almost all of the Christan holidays were old pagan festivals.

Some of those popes and other church leaders had mistresses and children.

The Church sold indulgences, looked the other way when the rights of Jews and Gypsies were violated, tortured people (mostly women) into confessing to witchcraft, executed people in gruesome ways for heresy, and told people that all their sins (no matter what they did) would be forgiven if they fought in the Crusades.

These were called the Dark Ages for a reason.

  6. WHY???????????

Please tell me that you are joking!!

Have you seen the mess that religion has made of this world????

Order is  EVERYTHING that is secular..

    chaos is assuredly,,,,, religion!!!!!!!

  7. You mean the DARK AGES ? After the collapse of civilization where thousands of years of learning and advancement were lost to book burning and religious oppression? Those middle ages?

  8. They criticize because the Catholic church used it's power to crush any who dared to question it's authority.

  9. Modern secularists have their own agenda and do not want to acknowledge that people who disagree with them ever did anything well.

    With love in Christ.

  10. They're just immature.

  11. The Middle Ages were great if you were a Crusading robber Baron, or conning pilgrims out of hard earned money with fake relics. If you disagreed with Aristotle or the Bible they would torture you as a heretic, fun times.

  12. Ever heard of the Vikings the moors the normans the goths the Franciska's the huns Hannibal the hammer ect etc etc  bucko

  13. You've spelled out the answer very well.  In fact, not only secularists paint a sordid picture of the Middle Ages but also their progenitors - the rabid Protestants since the 16th century until our present times.  This is because they know to talk about the great human achievements during this period would reflect positively on the Catholic Church they so love to revile.  In history, for instance, they ignore the fact that the revival of the cities took place not at the end but somewhere at the beginning of this period.  By the end of the 13th century, the cities of Rome, Florence, Paris, and even London were already very much in place.  The period expressed itself architecturally with the flowering of that style later to be known as Gothic, devising building concepts and solving structural problems with little help from the techniques alrady dicovered by the Greeks and the Romans.  Universities and colleges flourished as well during the Middle Ages, together with hospitals that provided medical care especially for the poor.  Arts and crafts, promoted by guilds, blossomed.  The Middle Ages gave us stain-glass art, illuminated books and the breathless murals of Fra Angelico.   Even science was developed; it was during this time that the astrolabe was put to use in maritime travel and alchemy, the beginnings of modern chemistry was widely practiced.  Even parliamentism started in the Middle Ages, and the principles of modern democracy had its early start with the growth of self-ruling guild cities and the rise of the bourgeoisie.

Those who denigrate the Middle Ages point to the auto-da -fes and the inquisition but these were practices that were never universally applied. and were practiced with strict roles to be followed by both church and civil authorities.   They also say the Middle Ages was the age of superstition, but these beliefs and practices persisted well into the succeeding centuries, even in Protestant areas.

  14. Can we say that Church of that time kept literacy from the "laity" on purpose back then, they taxes the serfs- it kept the church rich, and under control?

They had rank rank superstitions.  Thought women were of Satan.

Just read the wild statements of the likes of Martin Luther- who was a Catholic Priest back then.  They believed in all sorts of weird things.

Magic relics.  Demons sucking on you at night.  You could buy your way to heaven, via indulgences, the priests could condemn your soul...

I am very glad the world climbed out of that age.

And it's no coincidence that the Reformation and the Renaissance happened at the same time.

  15. There is more opportunity to criticize there even though much good was achieved.  they WANT to dwell on the bad

  16. Ever heard of the Crusades, bucko?  I don't know how the mass-slaughter of hundreds of thousands is considered "holy" but when you figure it out you let me know.

  17. Well, you kind of answer yourself in your question: why do moden SECULARISTS criticize the AGE OF FAITH? Probably because they are secularists and they don't think people's world views should be defined by faith.

  18. Perhaps they think the last 100 years of genocide at the hands of Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin etc never happened because they didnt see it with their own eyes.

  19. It was the age of faith since if you didn't have the correct faith chances are you were boiled in oil or whatever the torture dejour was.  Also, there was a supernova during that time and it was recorded and observed around the world for months, except that christian Europe since the Church said it was a sign of the devil and if you saw or noticed it then you would be boiled in oil.  Very enlightened era.

  20. i don't see going to church because it was against the law NOT TO as a good thing. see lots of people went cause they would get fined or thrown into jail if they didn't. oh and the protestants also thought church or jail/fine was also a good law too.

the Church abused its power considerably and that is why people criticize it.

also think about who you are speaking of. secular people.

also when you talk about a bunch of Popes running around having wives and children when they were supposed to be celebate...and book burning and a complete loss of science and mathematics as well as forced conversion or death...that doesn't sound fun to me at all!

and its not just modern "secularists" its been people since the 16th century bashing the church for its behavior in the Dark Ages...

  21. Because of all the technological and philosophical advances during the GOLDEN AGE of Rome, Greece and Egypt, IT WAS ALL LOST once the DARK ages came about.  Christianity caused a BACKWARD movement, we went from GOLDEN age to an IRON age.  Yeah, it was the age of faith.  It was the age of lost knowledge and barbarism.

Why don't you open your eyes for once and do some research.

And the chruch was christ was already divided, catholism wasn't the first church.  The Eastern Orthodox church is far older.

  22. i don't know maybe because of  the major decline in culture, science, and general human society until the Renascence
