Why do so many movies have French language options?

But not German, or Italian or Russian. It seems all subtitles are either in French, Francais or Spanish. Why are no movies hardly ever in German, for example? They all have Francais as an option under languages, and sometimes Spanish but other than that nothing else.

  1. italy and germany dub EVERYTHING. i know because i live in italy and EVERYTHING is dubbed into italian. every movie/show.  same in germany.  in russia they do too but it is really bad. it is just a guy narrating the dialogue and you can still kinda hear the original voices in the backround.  italian and german dubbing is much better.  different people are assigned for different voices and unlike russian dubbing, the original american voices are muted and it's just a score/effect track of the whole movie with italian/german-language, just like the spanish and french language tracks on american dvds.  unfortunately, italian and german movie dubs are only available on european/region 2 dvds.  you might be able to come across region 2 dvd dubs in the states off the internet or something, though, they are just not conveniently included on NA/region 1 dvds.

EDIT: and i forgot to add that sometimes for kids movies, on region 2 dvds, there will be even more language options.  for ex: on some of the kids' movies they sell in italy, they have original english, italian, croation, greek, german, french, dutch etc. language tracks.  italy and germany also dubs non-kid movies, too, so they are regulars on dvds even if it is not targeted to kids.

  2. Because Spanish and French are the other two main languages of North America. Mexico and Puerto Rico speak Spanish, Canada speaks English and French. It's not as much about providing minority languages as it is providing coverage for all of North America.

  3. Ermm...because they are usually made for the North American market which includes Canada, where French is widely spoken (and is the main language for millions of people).

Spanish because of the number of Hispanic immigrants, many of whom in the first generation at least have limited English (13% of US is Hispanic).
