Why do so many people ask for Irish or Welsh translations?

I am Austrian. For me it was such a surprise to see that there are so many people asking for Irish or Welsh translations. Isn't it more convenient to have one common language for Great Britain and Ireland? In the European Union they spend millions of Euros for translations. And a different language is often a reason for war, because the group of people with a different language is considered strange and not belonging to us. To say the truth, I am very worried. I think we've had enough wars in Europe, don't we.

Yes, but its all about Tradition and culture, and having your country's  language gives you some pride.

Although as your saying languages can create some barriers between people, cause frustration and short tempers.

Im Irish and i speak english, and i know very little of the Irish language myself.

Probably because Irish and Welsh are both growing languages - ie more and more people are learning them.

I'm Welsh and don't know much of thr Welsh Language, but I'm still interested to learn.  Its a cultural/heritage thing.

To begin with, Within Great Britain and Ireland as you call it there are 7 nations England, Scotland, Wales, The Isle of Mann, Northern Ireland and The Channel Islands, (these are all under the rule of Queen Elizabeth II, in the same way that Australia is). Ireland is a separate country and a republic, with its own language.

All of these nations have a strong national pride as well as a general right to be able to use their mother tongue while speaking or reading.

Do you not feel you have the right to speak English ?

How would you feel if it was decided one day to combine New Zealand and Australia and make you all speak Chinese just to make the area easy too administrate.

What right does anyone have to tell a country to give up its language, part of its national identity, just to save money on translations ???

This is a very ignorant question, I very much doubt anyone would go to war with Wales just because of the language, no-matter how odd it is.

I'm from Ireland.   At one time, England did want a common language for both islands, and Irish people were forced to speak English by law for many years.  As a result, the language was nearly lost and not many people speak it as a native language today.  

I know you don't understand the situation, since you're not from this country, but what you said could be quite insulting to Irish and Welsh people.  You're from Austria - you would probably be insulted if people said Austrians and Germans were the same thing.   Ireland is a different country, and has a different language.  I don't see what's so wrong with that.

Yes so let's not have English, Welsh is our native language , irish is the Native language of Ireland,You say that languages are the causes of War why should we have to fight for the wright to speak in our own languages against English?> I find speaking ENGLISH uncomfortable, Where i live 80%+ speak Welsh everyday you saying we shouldn't because were being different and it could cause a War?

You as an austrian who speaks Deutsch, wouldn't understand the need for language preservation then o'r retaining an Identity, But not only that there are hundreds of thousands 750 000 in fact who'd rather speak Welsh than English? Why should we speak the language of the incommers, the language of our invadors, Wales should be Independent

I don't think it has to do with war at all.  Irish and  Welsh, are mystical languages.  Irish tells the tales of Brian Boru, a great Celtic warriors, Cúchulainn, another.  Welsh is the language of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.  Both are romantic languages, mystical.  People who are into roleplay and fantasy are interested in such languages.  

Also, it was forbidden to speak Irish and Welsh for many years in their own country. Both languages were almost lost, and there has been a resurgence to bring the languages back, to get people back to a rich literary and historical culture.

Language is not a reason for war; greed is; religious differences is, fight for real estate/resources is, but not language.

Well it's like this, there's them there Scottish people who speak English and Gaelic and then there's them there Welsh people who speak English and Gaelic, and then there's them there Irish people who speak English, unless you are on holiday with them as i often am and none of them from the different parts of ireland understand each other!! and then there's us Tykes as wot speeks propa inglish like, 'wist thu friv?' 'where be hors thu then?' and 'Ow much?'

So basically we all speak English, so we don't actaully need to have translators, it's all them other foreign folks who need them!

An old form of Cymraeg(Welsh)was spoken long before the Celts invaded Britain.English is a 'modern' language.

Why should we give up our heritage? The term 'Welsh' itself is an insult.It comes from the Anglo-Saxon for 'foreigner of the borderland/foreign speaker'.

Therefore,it is the english who are the welsh,when it comes to language.

Considering Austria spawned Adolf Hitler,and others,you're hardly in a position to criticise anyone!
