Question:

Why do so many people become instantly hostile and defensive when discussing politics?

I am a liberal democrat and my boyfriend is a conservative Republican. We haven't killed each other (yet). I happen to think that open, friendly debate between differing political parties can be a healthy, productive thing. Unfortunately most people I talk politics with get really testy if I don't immediately agree with their views. Maybe the old saying about the impossibility of changing a person's view on religion or politics is true. What do you think? Thanks for your time and input.

  1. I think it's difficult to change someone else's opinion and I think you have to ask yourself, why would you want to change someone else's opinion? In politics, many times it's money that talks, special interests etc. we'll vote for you IF you make this law or veto that law. You know how it goes. I think it's important for folks to try not to label themselves but to stand up for things they believe in and to stand up to big government. We, the people, should be in charge of we, the people. I think too many Americans take for granted the freedoms they have, such as having your own opinion about politics and what goes on in this country. I think we all need to "unite" both parties, all parties even and bring this country back to a place where peace and prosperity and freedom are for everyone and not just certain people according to their party leader. Rejoice America! We're free! Let's keep America beautiful and free!  Amen

  2. Totally agree. People have strong convictions and believe there's no debate because their way of seeing things is the only way. To have someone challenge something you believe in so whole-heartedly is like telling a Christian Jesus doesn't exist. Their foundation is shaken and they only know one way to "fight" back, which is to denounce everything you believe to be true and right (politicially speaking of course).

  3. People get testy when they take it personally.

Some people have reason to take it personally though.

For example republicans want to take away or deny granting equal rights to g*y couples. Wouldn't you get upset if you had to pay taxes on your own money when your husband died? Or if you couldn't even marry him at all?

Some people have valid reasons for being upset by certain politicians.
