Question:

Why do so many people want a 1080p TV as opposed to 720p?

There is nothing even broadcast higher than 720p except for some 1080i HD movies on DirectTV and there is no plan anytime soon for broadcasts in 1080p if ever.

So unless you're planning on getting an HD DVD or a Blu-Ray why would you spend the extra money on a 1080p TV with no 1080p broadcast to watch?

  1. There's plenty of 1080i content, and for big enough screen sizes, it does make a difference whether you're watching it on 720p or 1080p TV.

  2. I got a 1080 because the sales representative stated

the picture & color would not be nearly as good on a 720.

Not knowing anything about either one I figured if I'm spending that kind of money why not get the best picture

    possible.

  3. There is actually plenty of 1080i being broadcast. CBS and PBS are in 1080i, for example.

    Why 1080p?

A 720p TV cannot display all 1080 lines of resolution.

Current fixed-pixel TVs (LCD, DLP, and plasma) cannot display interlaced signals; they are, by nature, progressive displays.

So, if you want a modern fixed-pixel TV, and you want 1080 lines of resolution, you will end up with 1080p.

  4. 1080p has a bigger resolution, than 720p TV's. If you watch normal television, there's no difference, because HD-TV is 720p, but if you watch HD-DVD's or Blu-Ray-Discs, you will notice a sharper picture with a 1080p TV. The size of the TV also matters, because the bigger the TV the bigger the difference between the 720p and 1080p picture. Xbox 360 and PS3 also show 1080p. If you only want to watch TV with it, 720p is enough, but if you're a home cinema lover or if you want to invest in the future, 1080p is probably the better choice. But you also have to look at the inputs. A new TV should definetely have at least 1 HDMI-port. Hope i could help you.
