Why do so many people waste time and money on cars ?

There are great travel opportunities on Public transport and luxury with trains, cruise ships, even a passenger ferry is much more luxurious than a car like a bentley.

Wy waste cash on cars ? I do not understand !

Cars are a lot cheaper than cruise ships, and I cannot take a train or a ferry to work, I live in Southern Cali for goodness sake!

Where I live there are no boats (in a desert), no trains, and no bus service within 8 miles of my house. I don't consider it a waste to drive my car, my truck or my motorcycle. I live in a sprawling, large US city and to have no car is to have no life. When it's 115 here in June, I'm not going to walk across the street to get my mail, much less walk 3 miles to the nearest store.

I didn't understand it, either!!!! Until recently...

An automobile is almost the exclusive symbol of one's means of versatility, physically... It is viewed as the main means of transport...



While growing up as a kid I always thought that cars would be replaced by a more efficient and safer means of transport before I even turn 18, but that was not the case, and now that I'm 25 and driving a clunker, I realize why people invest so much and put so much stock into their cars... Most people own only one car, and getting around place to place is something everyone does, for both employment and recreation.

It isn't impossible to find employment that is close, but people take automobiles so much for granted that they don't mind commuting... An automobile is a person's status symbol for how mobile they are. It's like every person is expected to have one to represent them, like if we all had our own profile card or something. This I just realized, and I'm 25.

I don't know where you live, but in most of this country there AREN'T "great travel opportunities" on public transport; it's impossible in many areas to get to work, for instance, without your own transport.  Around here, for a start, there is no rail service at all and minimal buses.

Some people want to impress others and feel better than others by polluting our world.  If mass transit is available where you live, you are able to save the earth, money and keeping up with the Jones.  In the great scheme of things, material things aren't important.

Reliable, and you don't have to change your schedules around public transport.

Plus, the car get you point to point without having a walk at the end of each one.

if you go away for a weekend, you've got the freedom to travel about in the car to detinstions that are unreachable by public transport.

you can carry more gear with you in your car than you can with public transport.

At this time of year, you don't have to sit n a crowded bus/train with people full of cold/illness.

You can sit there with your own music on as loud as you want.

you're guaranteed a seat in your own car...

Omg! I was just thinking about it recently and decided that I don't want to buy a car cuz it's too much trouble.

Ussulay people get a car when they are young when it's "cool" and a must. Then they just get used to it.

Well its like this. Its fun to have your own personal private transport that you don't have to share with anyone .Ä°f you don't smoke its nice to travel without having to suffer that discomfort. I think some people spend a lot more money than they need  to on their cars, but to call it a waste is a mistake. The value of the car may be less than it was when you bought say after 10 years but some cars are considered as fine investments. Personally I enjoy the freedom of being able to go where I want, when I want, without having to look at timetables of buses or trains, if I could drive around the world I would, just give me the fuel.

Well why do people pour money into anything?

Its an interest and a hobby.  I've been working on my car for quite some time, i buy the parts and do all the install work myself. Its nice to have something that you can take pride in.

Also people spend the money on the nice cars, or work on their own cars, so they can get that great sense of comfort and luxury that they would get on a cruise ship, ferry, train, what have you, every day.

Your examples, most of them arent used in day to day travel. And while yes they are very nice ways to travel i'm not going to take a cruise every time i want to take a nice, comfortable trip or drive. I'll just take my nice car.

It is hobby and some times fad to have new cars. People get some extra pleasure in moving at a speed that they can enjoy with the car. For some it is a necessary and for others it is luxarry. Any cars are at the peak of attraction although priced at a hegh level

i enjoy riding my bike i go from A to B on it without having to stop to pick people up go get dropped off yards away from where i want to be, i love my truck it goes anywhere and takes me and my family out together

You're focusing too much on luxury. It's an independent means of transport. That's the main reason; independence.
