  1. Now that the world is globalized, I am sure that there is no safe place in the world. There are some countries with more violence than others but every country has crime and violence. I am not sure about the statistics you say here.

  2. Economics + Education = Understanding.  I can remember back to when I was a kid in the USA and many people littered. That was until the government allocated a couple billion dollars to begin an anti-litter campaign. Likewise, drinking and driving as well as abusing women and children. Crimes deterrent is supposedly the justice system which in the USA as well as in Costa Rica is saturated. Most of the theft here is non-violent and drug related. The real issue is educating the kids so that they understand that crack cocaine is an addictive vice and is definitely not cool. If there was no crack cocaine there would be much less crime. Now all Costa Rica needs is a more money for social programs to help the uneducated understand more about social responsibility.

  3. What is your source?   The latest statistics that I saw in La Nacion show the violent crime rates in CR to be about the same as the U.S.  Denver and Seattle are safer but Los Angeles, Miami, St. Louis and Las Vegas are a lot more dangerous however.

However that is not the point.   Crime rates are increasing in CR and there are more murders and robberies than there were 5-10 years ago.   Just read the Costa Rican newspapers.  Rising crime rates may be the most serious issue in Costa Rica--so unless every Costa Rican is uneducated, it is a problem.  Although CR is one of the safest countries in Latin America, it is not as safe as it once was.

Secondly,  although violent crime in Costa Rica is much lower than in many/most American cities, property crime is quite high in comparison to the U.S. and it appears to be increasing so many Americans have been robbed (usually through stealth not violence) and they are complaining about the crime problem.

  4. What are you talking about? There are unsafe places in CR just like there are unsafe places in the USA. You just have to be careful where you travel.
