Why do so many witches have cats?

I know that some cats and witches are suppose to have a bond of some type...does anyone know "how" they work together?...no atheist please !!..don't know why an atheist would want to answer questions that involved anything supernatural anyway !!!!!

Familiars were demons sent to the witch by the devil in the form of cats. They were her appretice. She would suckle them or give them some of her blood to repay them.

Witches are said to have a "familiar" which is an animal they share a deep bond with. I'm not sure how it works really. Not all witches have one (and they're not always cats). I think some just like cats! XD

They have cats since they are very sensitive to their surroundings and help them to sense spirits and such.

Cats make great companions.  Some have cats as magical helpers, called familiars, but a familiar can be any animal.  My familiar is not one of my cats, but my rat.  Also there are many witches that do not have cats.  Witches with cats are just more noticed because of old superstition and steriotypes.

Don't be so stereotypical. I'm a witch and do not own a cat. Personally I do not like cats. I own a dog.

Cats were considers evil hundreds of years ago and somehow got linked to witches as their "familiars" and/or servants of the devil.  It was sometimes believed that witches would take the form of a cat.

I am a witch and I have 13 cats.  I also have 65 chickens, 20 goats and 2 ducks and 2 geese and one snake.  Right now one of my new kittens seems to be interested in magic, but he's too young to be sure yet.  The special bond you are talking about is a familiar which can be any animal or even something called spirit familiars.  The special bond is usually only with one animal at a time.  The animal wishes to work with the witch on the magical working they do.  It is also said you can "ride" you familiar (or any animal for that matter) in other words you astrally project into the animal and see through their eyes and go where they go.  I believe my familiar return to the earth plane after they pass on to continue working with me.  I don't care if I'm wrong I like to think my cat comes back.  Hope this is informative enough. PS Often the witch can communicate telepathically with the familiar.  That's one of the signs.

I have one cat.  That's not so many.  That is a misconception that all witches have cats.  Witches are people and have likes and dislikes just like everyone else.
