Because so many women have fallen victim to the belief that they have to fit into a certain size pair of jeans to be considered attractive. They don't see or accept their own natural beauty, because they're comparing themselves to this idealistic image of what beauty is here in America. Once we as women stop comparing ourselves to other women (or the models in magazines) and start seeing the beauty that "WE" where blessed with, then will stop having problems with our own self image. We're not all meant to look the same, because if we did we wouldn't be individuals and we wouldn't be unique.

Because they probably had some jealous jerk who told them they weren't. And, then they start thinking that everyone who does tell them they're pretty is lying.

I had an ex bf who used to put me down for how I looked, and I believed him even though others were telling me I was beautiful.  It took me a long time to realize that my ex was just trying to lower my confidence and didn't want me to be with anyone else.

I think that a lot of people are not conscious of the fact that they have changed, or the level at which they have. This means that if a woman has lost weight, she may still perceive herself as fat (which is partly behind some eating disorders), and if she was made fun of in middle or high school for her appearance she may still feel unattractive in college.

There are also factors such as perceived standards of beauty, the media, and makeup/clothing/diet pill commercials telling women they will not be beautiful unless they buy. On facebook, for instance, I and many of my female friends are targeted by ads about losing weight.

I was raised that it was wrong to be vain about oneself.  I do realize now that I am a beautiful woman, but it is still difficult to accept compliments from others or to have focus on my looks.

Because there are butt heads out there that always say the wrong thing.  Women are much more sensitive then men.  They take things more personal.  Guys, on the other hand are cement heads and usually say the wrong thing, which ruins the woman's self esteem.

Because we are taught from a young age what we are supposed to look like.  Fashion magazines, advertising, etc all show a specific type of women that are "beautiful."  Most women don't fit these images and consequently feel ugly.  We learn from a young age exactly what society considers beautiful, and exactly how we don't measure up.
