Question:

Why do some Christians insist that the bible doesn't contain contradictions? ?

I mean, just a simple read shows many, but they claim it doesn't even though its written down in black and white.

Is the ability to lie to yourself through overwhelming evidence a great importance to be a Christian?

(I have many examples available on request, but I thought I spare you the bother...)

  1. I can name a few.Thats why so many are confused.Thoe I try to be Christian I am confused on stuff too. Some have told, ask me things I can't answer because of contradictions.

  2. Haha. Dude, the Bible does have many contradictions. I'm a Christian and even I admit that. However, it's not meant for proof of Gods existence. It's meant so that when you find God you can read it and get closer in your intimate relationship with him. You Atheists spend too much time looking for contradictions. The bible holds spiritual truth, it's not necessarily proof of anything. It's just something that you read to teach your soul.

  3. Simply this friend.

Your claims are quite old and they have been addressed for a very, very  long time.  Just because you find some amusement in a list on an internet site doesn't mean that this hasn't been addressed for centuries.  It has.  You can find those answers if you choose to.

There are no contradictions.  The reason you THINK there are, is that you apply your current worldview to scripture.  That's ok, it's just erroneous.

You have to let scripture define scripture.  Use a proper hermeneutic. context.  Complimentary scripture.  You can't just cut n paste Bible and call it a contradiction.

Judas hanged himself.  Go ye therefore and do likewise.  Doesn't work, does it?  I did exactly what you did.  I chose two verses and made a "contradiction".

  4. Try naming one and I guarantee I can refute your so called intelligence.

  5. You forgot Genesis 1 and Genesis 2. I get stuck there. Why are there two almost completely different creation stories? Why bother?

I think Christians have to accept their god is generally mean to them.

  6. Been reading lists without looking into it for yourself I see. The purpose of these lists are to sling mud not to be objective. If they honestly looked, they would have a much shorter list.

There are no contradictions. Here are principles you can apply to understand apparent discrepancies. These principles, do away with your list here.

    1. The unexplained is not necessarily unexplainable.

    2. Fallible interpretations do not mean fallible revelation.

    3. Understand the context.

    4. Interpret difficult passages in light of clear ones.

    5. Don't base teaching on obscure passages.

    6. The Bible is a human book with human characteristics.

    7. Just because a report is incomplete does not mean it is false.

    8. New Testament citations of the Old Testament need not always be exact.

    9. the Bible does not necessarily approve of all it records.

    10. The Bible uses non-technical, everyday language.

    11. The Bible may use round numbers as well as exact numbers.

    12. Note when the Bible uses different literary devices.

    13. An error in a copy does not equate to an error in the original.

    14. General statements don't necessarily mean universal promises.

    15. Later revelation supercedes previous revelation.

I'll explain why the first 10 are not discrepancies.

    1. Creation was good until sin entered into it. After sin entered into it, it was not good. This is not a contradiction.

    2. 2 Chronicals 7:12, 16 mentions a temple. It does not say God dwells in it. God can fill a place with His presence. It's not His home though. This is not a contradiction.

    3. God is omnipresent. He is everywhere. This is not a contradiction.

    4. God can take on different forms. For example, God became a man called Jesus and was seen. We cannot, however see God in His glorified state and live. This is not a contradiction.

    5. Exodus 31:17 does not say God is tired. Just that He rested. As a general rule, He does not rest. He did that ONLY to set an example for us. General statements do not mean universal promises.  This is not a contradiction.

    6. I'm not entirely clear on what you mean. Hiding from God, does not mean that He doesn't know where you are.

    7. It appears God tests the heart to know it. This is not a contradiction.

    8. Not because the iron chariots were too strong for Omnipotence, or because he refused to help them; but because their courage and faith failed when they saw them. Therefore, it's not because God is not all powerful that they couldn't win. This is not a contradiction.

    9. The situation changed. God is a God of second chances. God will always react the same way. This is not a contradiction.

    10. This is a misunderstanding of the text. It is not a contradiction.

  7. Please give me your so called examples so I can prove you wrong.  The bible is Gods living word, and God can not be wrong, therefore His living word can not be wrong!

Are these your interpretations of verses, or are you quoting here?  And with your he and his, is that God you are talking about or some other he?  God knows whats in a person's heart, but he will test them so they learn what is in their own heart!  Give me quotes, not what you think a verse says.  And I presume since you are an expert, you have studied and found out what the original text means in the Greek and Hebrew and know that not all words translate exactly right.  Were we only have one word for love, they may have 15 and that is hard to translate correctly!

  8. Good job!!

If reality were such that h**l could exist you Xians would be the ones who qualify.

  9. There are no contradictions.

I have been able to sink any 'contradiction' that was presented to me.

There are some that are hard to solve.

Yet most of them are solved with a simple reading of the text in context.

  10. Half of those things are related to grammatical differences between Hebrew/Greek and English(like the plurality of God) the rest is easily explained with a little bit of study.
