On the Docklands Light Railway in England, some trains are driven by a driver and others are operated automatically. Why the difference?

  1. All DLR trains are staffed by a "Train Captain" who closes the doors and tells the computer to start the train. However should there be a fault, then that person can over-ride the computer and drive the train at a maximum speed of 20 mph from a normally hidden control panel at the front, under the instruction of the line controller at Wapping depot.

  2. On the DLR and the Victoria Line, there are no drivers. The driving of the train is done wholly automatically.

Unfortunately, we have, as yet, been able to train a computer to open and close the doors safely. So a Train Captain is employed for this menial, but essential, task! They can also override the system in an emergency. (Last month's crash on a european overhead monorail system might have been avoided if they had been present.)
