When I go on the DLR why do some trains have operators where they lift the panel up by the front seat window and appear to press some buttons, whereas on other trains they do not have operators.

Confused.

  1. ALL DLR trains have "Train Captains". If they have to go the front to open up the controls it usually means that there is either a fault on the train or one on the trackside equipment causing loss of signalling TO the train's copmputer ! ! !

  2. All DLR trains have a 'train captain' He doesn't drive the train, but can make adjustments, if necessary to very systems. All the trains are driven automatically, however.

  3. The on-board operators can override the automatic train control. This might be necessary if there are engineering works going on or if the standard schedule is disrupted for some reason.

  4. Most of the trains have on board operators, but the majority of the time they stand besides the door and semi control the train using the door override switch, so holding the doors open longer than what the computer is programmed to do so.

Then there will be occations where the operator has been requested from Control to override the computer from the panel at the front seat because of technical reasons.

I hope that my answer helps. Joolz

  5. The DLR trains are controlled automatically by computers, centralised in a big room. That room also controls security etc.

However, all the human influence is to check for errors; or, in case of problems, to overide the system; while the train is automatic, the train itself can override the central computer.

  6. OMG does the union know about this???
