Why do some Internet Cookies last so long?

Question

I have one cookie on my computer that lasts until January 2038. Isn't that way too long because it would be impossible for me to keep my current computer until 2038.

The person writing the site decides how long he wants the cookie to last.  I agree that 30 years is a bit loing, but that's effectively a "do not expire" cookie.  Some last for 20 minutes, some last for decades.  Why do some people wear plaid?  Personal choice, I guess.
