This is by no means an attack on Submitters, but a genuine inquiry.

Since the Qur'an teaches 5 different prayer times, why do some Submitters pray only 3 times a day?

love for all, hatred for none

  1. In Qur'an, I don't think 5 prayers are mentioned, only 3:

    1. Fajr      (24:58; 11:114).

    2. 'Isha     (24:58; 17:78; 11:114)

    3. Wusta   (2:238; 17:78)

Qur'an-only people do not have Salat al-Dhur or 'Asr, they have a "Middle prayer."

    Baqarah {2:238}

"You shall consistently observe the contact prayers, especially the MIDDLE PRAYER, and devote yourselves totally to God."

Salat al Maghrib & 'Asr are not mentioned in Qur'an, this is why they don't pray 5 times.

    EDIT:

    Isra'a {17:79}

The reference u made regarding this verse does not refer to 'asr and maghrib:

"Keep up prayer from the declining of the sun till the darkness of the night and the morning recitation; surely the morning recitation is witnessed."

The "declining of the sun" refers to the point at which the sun starts to decline after being at its highest point; this is what Qur'an-only people call "salat al-Wusta" meaning the "middle prayer."

And also in this verse, there is no refernce of the evening, or in other words, maghrib. "Darkness of the night" refers to 'Isha.

  2. Its three times in Shims but there is no differnce in the Slahs, its the same and five in all!

  3. Cause they're too lazy, at work/school or just dun think it's important. they should know all 5 prayers are a MUST but people think God will forgive them n understand ehhh that's all i can think of right now

  4. First, let's have a look at Surah 20, Verse 130:

فاصبر على مايقولون وسبح بحمد ربك قبل طلوع الشمس وقبل غروبها ومن اناء الليل فسبح واطراف النهار لعلك ترضى

Instead of me giving my own interpretation and translation of the Quran, I will cite them from a few sources in which I agree with the overall translation:

Yusuf Ali: Therefore be patient with what they say, and celebrate (constantly) the praises of thy Lord, before the rising of the sun, and before its setting; yea, celebrate them for part of the hours of the night, and at the sides of the day: that thou mayest have (spiritual) joy.

Pickthal: Therefor (O Muhammad), bear with what they say, and celebrate the praise of thy Lord ere the rising of the sun and ere the going down thereof. And glorify Him some hours of the night and at the two ends of the day, that thou mayst find acceptance.

Hilali/Khan: So bear patiently (O Muhammad SAW) what they say, and glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting, and during some of the hours of the night, and at the sides of the day (an indication for the five compulsory congregational prayers), that you may become pleased with the reward which Allah shall give you.

Clearly, there are five distinct times which are mentioned in this one verse, according to the three major translations of the Quran:

    1. "before the rising of the sun"

    2. "before the setting of the sun"

    3. "some hours of the night"

    4. "the sides/two ends of the day (two separate prayers)"

The specified prayers are those listed below:

    1. Salaat Al-Fajr (صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ) - Dawn Prayer / 24:58

    2. Salaat Jumu’ah (صَلَاةِ جمعة ِ) - Friday Prayer / Salat Al-Thuhr on other days (decline of the sun)

    3. Al-Salaat Al-Wusta (الصَّلاَةِ الْوُسْطَى) - Middle Prayer / 2:238

    4. Salaat Al-Maghrib - Sunset Prayer

Assalaata Ledulooki Ash-shamsi Ela Ghasaqi Al-layl

    - الصَّلاَةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ

    - at the sun's decline till the darkness of the night / 17:78

The sun is at it's highest peak typically in the noon (depending on the month) between 12-1 pm (Pacific Time). The decline of the sun begins right after 12-1 and that is the same time Thuhr is prayed. In this verse, all prayers from Thuhr (decline of the sun), Asr (Middle prayer), Maghrib (end of the day), and Isha (night prayer) are included.

    Tarafayi Annahaari Wazulafam Min Allayl

    - طرفي النهار وزلفا من الليل

    - at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night / 11:114

(Maghrib marks the end of the day).

    5. Salat Al-Ishaa (صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ) - Night Prayer / 24:58

There are clearly 5 different prayers mention in the first verse I provided. Regardless of Hadiths, for those "Submitters", you owe quite a bit of prayers. The Hadiths are not meant to replace the Quran, rather elaborate on it. You'll have to look very hard within verses to find things you don't even believe exists.

I got into an argument with one of the "Submitters" a couple of days ago and he did not believe Hijab was required. He provided all the verses that contained the word "Hijab" but not the verse that clearly stated that woman are to draw their cloaks/covers/veils over their bosoms. Hadiths are simply recorded traditions (actions and sayings) of the prophet Muhammad and he is our example. His actions are based on the Quran, and those actions are recorded as Hadiths. With the aid of Hadiths, people cannot translate the verses or elaborate on them and add new meanings or come up with alternatives that fit their points. There is of course, the problem that people accept only certain Hadiths. But, for those that are true, the only elaborate on the Quran. The Hijab is required, and there are 5 prayers, not 3.

Hope this answered your question brother =]

    Allah Ma3ak

  5. salam brother .. i don't understand what u mean by submitters or who u r referring to by that but a true Muslim obeys Allah's commands and pray five times a day as Allah stated in the Nobel quran !

edit to add: thank u for making things clear to me ! that is weired ! sunna and hadith explains stuff that is mentioned in the Nobel quran ! I've done some researches and it says that The Submitters are followers of the late Rashad Khalifa, a man who claimed to be a Messenger of Allah. and since they don't believe in sunna they destroyed three pillars in Islam : SALAT (prayer) , HAJJ , ZAKAT and FAST !

but there weren't anything about them praying three times a day ... i think the answer to ur q would be by a submitter !
