Question:

Why do some atheists feel that they must tell people God/Jesus doesn't exist...?

...regardless of how relevant or not to the question it is?

Seriously can you people not treat a question as hypothetical?

Firstly I KNOW there are Christians who treat the existence of god as a certainty but it can be taken as read that that's their belief.

I want to know why some atheists seem to think that it's worthwhile making a post (for example) saying nothing more than 'Jesus wasn't real' in answer to a question about his skin tone.

a) How does that answer the question?

b) Why would you do that? What's the point?

There seem to be three possibilities:

1) They are being deliberately annoying.

2) They think that stating it enough times makes it true (I don't care if it is or not repeating it will never make it more true)

3) They seriously believe that it is true and they must convert all non-believers to their beliefs to save them from lies and evil. (note the parallels with Christianity)

4) They're looking for an easy two points

5) They think it makes them look clever

So why do these 'answers' keep showing up? I don't care about whether they are right or wrong I want to know their reasons for the submission.

  1. I guess they do it for the same reason religious people drop the name of God/Jesus in answers where is not relevant. Propaganda.

  2. Because they are doing the work of their master, Satan. We are not worried at the things they say, we believe, and we will continue to pray for them.

  3. devil is playing tricks in their gullible minds.. they don't believe in him, so that is easy access for Satan

  4. Why do all theists feel that they must tell people god does exist?

We're just taking our share of equal time to express our opinions.

  5. For the same reason that religious people make similar posts- insecurity with their beliefs contributes to anger and intolerance toward others, and they think they can find relief or vengeance by making posts like that.  Frustration at the apparent irrationality of the other side probably plays a role, too.

  6. Some children tell other children that santa claus does not exist. These same people group up to tell christians that their fairy does not exist. I think that they do it to help these people, and not to make them sad for knowing the truth.

  7. The devil best lye is that he has made people think that God or himself is not real.  Even Satanist believe that God exist. If the devil can keep people blinded in the area of God he wins.

  8. Well, if someone asks a question about Jesus' skin tone, then saying that he didn't exist would be saying that he had no skin to have a tone. So it is a correct answer. It would be like someone asking how many toes does an eel have. If you point out that eels don't have feet, you're also saying that they don't have toes.

  9. because they have nothing else to believe-in' ..in their miserable little lives.

  10. I can't think of any real reason to give that answer to the sort of questions you mention, except to get an easy two points. I wouldn't give that answer unless the question was," Do you think so and so exists?" And then I would ellaberate a bit, or in my case probably too much:) :)

  11. They have just as much right to tell people Jesus DOESN'T exist as believers have to tell people he DOES.

No special privileges on either side.

  12. For the same reason that  people who believe in God/Jesus, feel they must tell people the he does exist. I'm not atheist, but what would the difference be about one or the other speaking what they believe. It is human nature, we all speak of what we think is right.

  13. Because believing in mythical beings is just baffling. They are trying to help you psychologically because if you believe in god then you have no faith in yourself as a thinking, existing creature.

  14. They are just the equivalent of religious people who go around telling people "You MUST believe or you WILL go to h**l."  I think that it's a mental problem.  People who feel that they must force their views on people (atheist/religious) because "They themselves"  can not understand why or how someone else could disagree with them.

  15. spreading the word..

they think they're striking back those ones who try to shove their beliefs in others' throats...

and others are compassive, they feel sorry about how they believe in something that doesn't make sense for them

  16. It would be easier for you to avoid this annoyance by phrasing the question for EVERYONE here, such as:

    "If Jesus existed....."

    or

"let's presume for a moment that Jesus did in fact exist....what color, etc."

Or exclude non-believers from your question.

  17. I don't do it but the level of certainty with which Christians and Muslims express themselves with regard to the certainty of there being a God is really irritating.  People are probably just irritated.

  18. As a non Atheist, I don't think they do. I have never ever been approached by an Atheist and been told "there is no god", and here is a track outlining our beliefs. I have however been accosted hundreds of times by my fellow Christians who keep trying to convert me to a faith to which I already belong. Sorry, just telling the truth.

  19. They said it is to get points.I wonder if they think points will save them from the flying spaghetti monster.LOL

  20. I believe only god knows the answer to this one.

  21. Because that's the right answer.

If someone is debating whether or not he should buy presents for his children, because he's not sure if Santa thinks they've been naughty or nice:

The answer is, buy the presents, because Santa isn't real.

  22. misery loves company

  23. Methinks some protest too much.  (To paraphrase Shakespeare)

  24. I get what your saying, but it's really no different then what christians do....My husband is a atheist and we have had many conversations on the subject. Christians also like to try to change you to their mode of thinking. It doesn't matter what you believe in, people are going to defend their beliefs if they feel strongly about them....I am a spiritualist myself and I will also defend my beliefs.

  25. What was Blarg the MIghty king of Aquitania's skin tone?

Answer that without telling me he doesn't exist.

  26. Well I was just being honest. I know they don't exist so I would be lying if I said they did.

  27. Jesus wasn't real.

  28. It's pointless to answer a hypothetical about an imaginary being, that's why.  Seriously, if someone asked you what colour Santa's skin was, you wouldn't feel at all compelled to say "But Santa isn't real" meaning there's just no real answer to the question.

  29. Those three possibilities are actually five possibilities, and you STILL managed to miss one.

    6) Because ideas must stand on their own merits in the collective space of ideas, and without opposition to those ideas, they can never be tested, so you could end up believing any absurd proposition that enters your head.

  30. You know what? You've got a point.

  31. Because we thrive on pointing out facts to those who don't seem able to recognize them...
