Why do some baseball players hold batting gloves when they're on base. Not wear the gloves, just hold them?

it forces the player to keep their hands closed to prevent  jamming or breaking  their fingers.  

like mike young  ss texas  did last week.  when he dove back into 1st  and now he can barely hold a bat for the next 2 weeks  because he fractured his index finger

They hold them to keep a fist.  A lot of players when sliding will open their hand exposing their fingers to get jammed or even worse stepped on.  Have you ever had your hand stepped on by a metal cleat?  Trust me it's not the greatest feeling.
