Why do some botanists store the seeds of newly discovered plant species or varieties in dry, refrigerated....?

Probably the most important reason is to make sure the new species isn't lost forever if something happens to its habitat in nature such as forest clearing for agriculture!  Hybrid corn has replaced traditional varieties of corn in Mexico.  The varieties in Mexico have different genes than the modern hybrids.  When we grow just a single variety, the crop is highly susceptible to new diseases or pests that may occur.

    Seed banks are like savings account for money.  It'll be there when you need it.

  3. It slows down the seed's metabolism- so they'll last longer, and be around if needed.
