  1. Depends on the soil.


  2. I depends on where the city sources its water.

    If the water comes from an area that is supplied by runoff water that comes from land that is primarily limestone then the water will be hard.

  3. As a general rule, the more rainfall an area has, the softer the water. In the U.S., there is a fairly sharp demarcation at the 100th meridian, soft to the east and hard to the west.

  4. It depends on what minerals are in the soil around the area. Higher concentrations of stuff like calcium in your water makes it "hard"

    fresh snowpack makes for really good water.

    much of the northwest has good water.

    San Francisco in particular.

    calcium, as i recall, is a problem.
