I have seen some signs in certain cities in southern cali. Like "welcome to vista, CA" and then there are lots of signs on them like "lions" and i think masons. I'm not sure but only certain cities have them. What are they and what do they mean? And why are they there? I've always wondered that. Thanks.

  1. These are service clubs, usually international organizations of volunteers and they all help target groups/have target activities. All cities have them.  You can usually find out more about them through your local chamber of commerce or health unit.  Here are some examples:

"Lions are an international network of 1.3 million men and women in 202 countries and geographic areas who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world.  Lions are known for working to end preventable blindness.

Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America will serve the people and communities through benevolent programs, demonstrating that Elks Care and Elks Share.  Known for drug education, scholarships, help to veterans.

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.  Rotary Volunteers allows Rotarians and other skilled professionals to offer their services and experience to local and international humanitarian projects.

Rotary Youth Exchange offers students ages 15-19 the chance to travel abroad for cultural exchanges of one week to a full academic year. Rotary clubs and districts sponsor and host about 9,000 Youth Exchange students a year."

Masons (very controversial), I'll let you Google that yourself.

  2. Many cities like to advertise their clubs, charity organizations, churches, etc.

It just lets people know what is available in their city.
